An accounting method that records revenue and expenses when incurred, regardless of whether revenue actually was received, or expenses actually were paid. As an example, a manufacturing company records a sale when a product is shipped to the customer even if the sale was on credit. It also records at that time all expenses associated with that sale, regardless of whether the actual cash has been transferred.
